“What is needed, rather than running away or controlling or suppressing or any other resistance, is understanding fear; that means, watch it, learn about it, come directly into contact with it. We are to learn about fear, not how to escape from it.” –Jiddu Krishnamurti
For those who do not know this amazing philosopher, it is useful to mention that Krishnamurti is probably the most important modern philosophers, in the sense that most of his work evolved around the processing of Fear, in order to free the mind, the soul and the body. Ultimately that very fear is first rooted in the fear of being. From it derives all the other fears: fear of not being able to compete enough… fear of not being loved for who we are… fear to be left behind…. fear of the unknown in general.
Then we have another kind of fear, and which is projected (by design) into the environment 24/7. Fear is always a mental construct which holds us back and thus prevents self-betterment. This very societal fear is inherently far deep rooted into the quest for materialism, which always drives to evaluate and measure constantly, what we perceive as happiness – morally and physically. It is a persistent and resilient illusion as it cannot be measured and because it is an individual experience that cannot be taught. Though paradoxically, if such a mechanisms could be taught from a very early age, the world would be a very different place… again, if it were. And lastly, it can neither be quantified because happiness vanishes as soon as we seek to make it last.
The less expectations, the more happiness…. and the more security. Although, in a nutshell, the situation is very simple to lay out, the trickiest part resides in the understanding and then of course, the practice, of such values. Mainly because materialism has skewed perceptions since ever. Looking honestly at the situation from different angles will always result in same direct causation reappearing on the surface. Thus we shouldn’t really wonder why the planet is suffering. In our days and age, and considering the so many means of communication available, it is rather obvious that peace will never be achieved as long as the threat of war exists and takes our freedoms away daily.
What The Peace Movement Never Understood
The world has seen countless of pro-peace organizations and up to today, neither of them has ever grasped the obstacle that is materialism and how it affects behaviors. Or maybe they did/do, and are just fooling their followers. However, would it be about pro-peace or humanitarian entities, it all boils down to the same dilemma: fear generated by materialism ever increasing and distorting the “fear of being” further.
There is no chicken-egg dilemma.
Enlightenment will come for Humanity when most humans will have comprehended that the fear embedded in materialism has to be let go, and the only way to achieve that is to eliminate monetarism. The dilemma is very profound but there is no other way around. This is precisely what Krishnamurti meant in the quote inserted at the end of this blog: that a fear based society is a sick society. As for the fear inherent to birth, the Fear of Being, it is Divine Gift whose purpose is to help us comprehend our journey through endless self-betterment and co-create with other fellow humans.
